HELP! Themed search: fics where religion plays a big part
Today I'm looking for the fics where religion plays a big part, for [info]_sabriel who gave me months and months of paid LJ time :)

Suggesting fics, please, tell me *how* they qualify. I'll be immensely grateful.

What qualifies:

- only the major religions, like Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam. Not that I mind other religions or beliefs, but in this case major religions is what I'm interested in, so don't flame.
- fics where any character becomes a monk/nun or a priest, or where they take a big part in the communal religious life in another way.
- fics that work with religion in other ways: interpreting or using sacred texts or ceremonies and so on.

King Draco's Code:

- no fics that work with pagan beliefs other than those included into Buddhism or Hinduism;
- no witchkraft of any non-HP sort;
- no Greek/Roman myths;
- no fics featuring Heavens vs Hell battles that are reflected in HP characters;
- no fics that speak of witch hunts (were it time-travel, AU or Founder fic) -- I consider it a separate theme.
- quotations from the Bible aren't enough.
- Canticles (Song of Solomon) used so that the result looks like a songfic don't qualify.
- Christmas stories don't qualify.
- no WIPs that have only a chapter or two written;
- no drabbles;
- do not bring fics you haven't read;
- do not bring fics you didn't like;
- do not bring fics the authors of which show no grammar or spelling skill even if you liked them;
- do me a courtesy, please, do not leave only a link. I'd be really grateful if you tell me (besides the title and author) whether the fic is a WIP or completed, what the pairings and the rating are.

The fics are sorted in alphabetical order by TITLE (articles excluded). DO NOT bookmark this post; it's just a draft. I'll post *the* list later.

Agnus Dei, by [info]silentauror
HP/DM, R, long one-shot. Summary: "Post-Hogwarts. Mystery abounds in the Auror Department, and two of the Aurors find themselves experiencing a friendship more intense than it should be." Draco invites Harry to sing in a Church of England church choir.

Article Thirty-Six, by [info]telepwen
Gen; PG, one-shot. Summary: "A difficult good-bye turns into a confessional for a boy that has never before spoken of his past to anyone." The fic deals with Tom's orphanage being a highly religious place which influenced his later decisions in life. Heavy on the Anglicanism.

Cadence, by John ([info]folk)
HP/DM; R, one-shot. Part of the Powerless sequence, follows Reflections. Summary: "Music is powerful. It has the power to change moods, soothe souls, reassure fears and ignite hearts. Religion is powerful. It has the power to mold worlds, form minds, lift hopes -- and to dash them. Combined, you have a cadence, a perfect cadence. One man is searching for his identity -- for his soul -- several years after the end of the war. His search has led him to a choir singing in a chapel, and it is there he has an epiphany of hope, fear, resolution and love."

Catechism, by Dreamfall ([info]dreamfall_ff)
Gen; R, WIP, AU. Summary: "What if the Dursleys were smarter? Smart enough to turn Harry against magic- against himself. How long would it take anyone to realize how much damage was done, and once it was discovered how could they ever hope to fix it? A disturbing look at a Harry who has been taught from infancy to hate and fear everything he is." Warnings: Quite disturbing. Various kinds of abuse. Harry with something of a house elf mentality.

Catechism, by [info]platoeatssouls
DM/RL/SS; PG-13, one-shot. Witten for: Eudora Bragg (039), who requested some major injury done to Draco, a recovery aided by Snape and Lupin, and no whiny brat-ness. Written as a formal Catholic catechism.

Cenotaph, by [info]ellid
SS/RL; PG, one-shot. Summary: "Remus visits a grave and encounters the unexpected." Snape (who is there for the yahrzeit of his (Jewish) mother) teaches Lupin a graveside ritual in case he can't perform it next year. Part of Motherless Child series.

Chanukah story, by [info]mamadeb
Gen; G, Snape-centric, one-shot.

Clay, by Kass ([info]kassrachel)
SS/HP; R, one-shot. Summary: "In which the fight against You-Know-Who continues. And there is mysticism. And eventually shagging." The fic centers around Kabbalah and Jewish mysticism.

Confessional, by [info]nightfalltwen
R, one-shot. Summary: "The act of confession is to find absolution, to find forgiveness for sins. Harry forgives others, but yet can not forgive himself." Harry is a priest

Dance with me Harry, by Aerie22
Het: HP/HG, Harry/Parvati; PG-13, novel-length. Summary: "After the people of Little Whinging start to notice the Dursleys' behaviour toward Harry, he is adopted by the Muggle vicar and his wife." Sequel: The Next Dance, (WIP).

Dissipation and Despair, by AJHall ([info]ajhalluk)
DM/NL; R, novel-length. Sequel to Lust Over Pendle. Whole story arc can be found here. Summary: "After offending his Bishop, the Rev. Peter Blakeney had feared his career was at an end. Then, to his surprise came the offer of the incumbency of St Sebastian's Church, Malfoy Intrinsica. And despite the foot and mouth epidemic, sinister carvings in the Church and all the locals changing the subject if he mentioned the Manor or its reclusive Lord, he felt he was settling in well. Until one night there came a tap at his study window, and he found himself about to discover exactly why St Sebastian is the patron saint of archers, enemies of religion, gardeners, murrains of cattle and plagues. A cosy English village whodunnit in the classic tradition, give or take an Unforgivable curse or so."

Do Unto Others, by [info]rosaleendhu
Snape/Jesus; PG, one-shot. Warning: It's slash. It's got a real, historical person in it. It touches on religion.

Flagellare, by [info]underlucius
SS/?. Summary: "Snape is not a monk, and there are a lot of temptations." Warnings: chan, dubious consent, voyeurism.

Gate of Ivory, Gate of Horn, by [info]wemyss
HP/DM; NL/LL, R/Hr, GW/Colin etc; light R; novel-length. Summary: "Harry and Draco are dreaming dreams. The same dreams. The same, possibly precognitive, dreams. The Headmaster knows this. He also knows that trying to fiddle a prophecy is rather dicey: look at Œdipus at the crossroads, Tom Riddle at Godric’s Hollow..." These dreams of a too-good-to-be-true post-War world include: Harry-and-Draco as occasional churchwardens and permanent choir members, Dean-as-Chapel, SCR arguments about religion, Wizarding C-of-E types baffled by Muggle neo-pagans who believe in Muggle ideas of ‘magic’, an unbroken underground Celtic Church for Wizards, Tony Goldstein analogising Harry and Tom Riddle to Rabbi Akiva and The Other, respectively, Wizarding bishops of Salisbury etc.

Home for Chanukkah, by Atalanta Pendragonne ([info]atalantapendrag)
Gen; G, one-shot, humour. Summary: "First-Year Severus Snape makes his first trip home for the holidays."

** In the Presence of Angels, by Seldes Katne
Gen; one-shot. Summary: "A grandmother tells her granddaughter a Hanukkah tale." Borderline case 'cos it's an OC who practices Judaism, not a canon character.

Iscariot, by Cedar (cedarlibrarian)
One-shot, canon pairings, PG. Summary: "A dream. A question. A betrayal. The cost." Pettigrew as Judas and James as Jesus on the night of the Last Supper.

Kaddish, by Sam Vimes ([info]copperbadge)
Gen; G, one-shot. Summary: "Remus takes Harry to Godric's Hollow, in memory of Sirius." Remus teaches Harry how to say Kaddish for Sirius.

Liturgy of the Hours, by [info]shikishi
Gen (with a small bit of Theodore/Blaise at the end); one-shot, Theodore-centric. Summary: "In 6th year things begin to change within Slytherin House, Theodore's POV."

Mating Season, by [info]ellid
SS/RL; R; novella. Summary: "Summary: It's never easy moving into a new house, especially if not all of your friends approve." Author's Notes: "This story is a direct sequel to New York Minute and takes place between March 20 and 31st, 2002." Part of Motherless Child series. Someone sabotages Remus's potion for religious reasons.

Mine Angel to Testify, by [info]son_of_darkness
HP/DM; NC-17, one-shot. Summary: "A battle over two thousand years old is finally laid to rest." Warnings: Blood, gore, violence, non-con, Biblical references, Blasphemy.
Illustrated by [info]hill_ (formerly known as Naggingfishwife).

Ministry, by [info]blythely
RW/DM; NC-17, one-shot, AU. Fantasy Fest fic, written for [info]cloisonne who requested: Ron/draco, with a side of Snape. Victorian AU. Dark!fic. Rent boy. BDSM. Warnings: As above, and blatant misuse of 19th century religion. Ron is a monk and faced sexual temptation from Draco.

Nachash, by Sushi ([info]wikdsushi)
Gen, PG, one-shot. Jewish Snape. Summary: "Nachash is the Hebrew word for serpent or snake." More tradition than religion, but still fits.

O my soul, by [info]logospilgrim (or link to ch.1; the latest chapter on LJ)
Gen, Snape centric, post GoF; PG-13, WIP. Summary: "Severus no longer bears the Dark Mark, and is transformed at every level. Features Saint!Snape." Snape is beaten and left to die by deatheaters before being rescued by a group of monastics from the Easten Orthodox church.

Of Angels And Demons trilogy, by [info]batsutousai: Tainted Wings, To Fly Without Wings, part 3 is yet to be written.
LV/HP, NC-17; three-part series. AU. Warning: OOC. Summary 1: "Heaven and Hell can never agree, but could one very special Angel change the world forever?" Summary 2: "God-to-be Harry Potter has fallen in love with the Demon Lord Voldemort. It is a match that will cross boundaries and change worlds, if only the Angels will allow it." The side of Light resides in Heaven and the side of Dark in Hell with muggles in between.

Old Acquaintance, by [info]ellid
SS/RL; R, one-shot. Summary: "Old acquaintances can pop up in the strangest places." Part of Motherless Child series. Snape and Lupin run into a former schoolmate who is now an Anglican priest.

Oremus, by T-chan ([info]libertas_mundi)
SS/HP; NC-17, one-shot. Summary: "Sumary: a church, a past love, a good-bye." Warning: religious themes, mentions of characters deaths.

The Pendulum of Choice, by Rushlight ([info]rushlight75)
Various pairings, mostly Harry-centric; G to NC-17; WIP. Harry travels through different alternative universes, in part 8 everyone is in a monastic-type order.

Piety and Confession, by Raget Nimds (Cybele and Snaples)
1) SS/HP, implied HP/BZ.; R, one-shot. Summary: "Snape gives Harry a strange order." Warnings: Twistedness.
2) SS/HP; NC-17, one-shot. Summary: "Sequel to 'Piety'. A strange detention." Warnings: Twistedness. Sacrilege. I'm not kidding. Don't read if desecrating the church squicks you.

The Proprietor, by [info]nimbus1944
Gen; PG, one-shot. Summary: "While feeling low at Christmas, Harry finds a friend and confidant." Harry, confused and fearful about his own life, reflects on his actions in terms of what little he knows of the Ten Commandments.

Redemption, by [info]rowanrhys
Gen; one-shot, PG-13 Warnings: character death. Summary: "Written in response to McTabby's Blamefic challenge from LJ. AngeloftheNorth wanted Snape to meet Jesus."

Redemption, by Tarie ([info]ofscarletwoman)
HP/DM, NC-17, one-shot. Summary: "Draco prefers to place his beliefs, hopes, and fears in the hands of someone real. He prefers to pour all of his passion and pain into devotion to one person. This person is his saviour, and he is real." It's kind of Harry = Christ, in a way.

Sanctuary, by [info]ishafel
Gen; PG-13, one-shot. Summary: "All mankind is of one author and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language." Warning: character death. Harry is a priest. HBP spoilers.

Studies of God: part 1, part 2, part 3, by [info]fivil
HP/DM; R; 3-chapter fic, AU. Summary: ""This is a story where Harry is a Finnish Theology student. (Yes, you heard me.)"

The Twenty, by Leyna Rountree
Het: Hermione/Snape, Pansy/Draco, Harry/Ginny. PG-13, novel-length. Summary: "Hermione and Pansy form an elite group of witches. They possess one unusual thing in common. Facing their most carnal desires, they will harness a power not seen in an age, to save themselves and protect Hogwarts." Hermione sings in a church choir.

A Valediction, Forbidding Mourning, by [info]ellid
SS/RL pre-slash, PG-13, one-shot. HBP spoilers. Sequel to Cenotaph but not part of the series. Summary: "After Dumbledore's death, Remus waits by a grave."

**Vector's Challenge, by [info]kaylarudbek
Eventually Snape/Vector; PG-13, humour, WIP (discontinued?). Summary: "Summary: Prof. Emmy Vector is sick of Snape's favoritism and the other faculty are grumbling about it. She challenges Snape to be fair to all the students for one month. If he can manage it, she promises to do a belly/Egyptian dance in the Great Hall on Halloween. If he loses, she washes his hair for him." Emmy Vector is Roman Catholic. This does become an issue between herself and others among the teaching staff at Hogwarts. Not sure it qualifies.

Curiousity: Ratzinger/HP challenge ficlets Entries. Mind you, they are RPF x-overs!

Do you know any other good fics that might qualify? Please, tell me!

If there are fics that use Song of Solomon as a songfic, I wanna see them.

(If there are fics that pagan religions play a major part in, I wanna see those too, but I'm not interested in the blend of HP magic & Wiccanesque magic, nor in Harry saying "blessed be" to his friends. I've yet to see any fanfic that has a pagan religion as other than window-dressing.)

Re Song of Solomon as a songfic: I've seen something of the kind on FF net, it was horrible.

"I've yet to see any fanfic that has a pagan religion as other than window-dressing"

So far as I've seen, "window-dressing" it usually is. The closest to pagan beliefs in essence I've seen was Tara Tory's sequel to "The Hall of Mountain King", it's at ISF.

    Drawing Down the Moon by Hades' Phoenix
    Summary: COMPLETE.[Preslash.AU]In 1642, Harry is a Healer with bitter memories and magic unwanted in a Christian town. When Hogsmeade's Father dies, he suddenly finds himself fighting for his life, his morals, and his destiny against the fires of hatred.
    Rated: T
    Pairings: eventual Harry/Draco; side of Sirius/Remus, Hermione/Ron
    It is complete but there is going to be a sequel.

    I'm not quite sure if this qualifies but I enjoyed it so much I figured it wouldn't hurt to try. It does deal with Christianity as a major focus of the fic, but there are some mentions of what could be considered paganism in it. I'll let you decide. Hope you like it.

    I'm not sure about this fic... On the one hand, it does speak of Christianity and witchcraft, on the other hand, it's not the kind of AU I'd gladly take. I'm afraid that next we'll have dozens of fics that are awfully anachronistic and speak of the witch-hunts etc. I wouldn't want them. I'll take some time thinking, OK?

    May I suggest Dance with me Harry by Aerie22? It is a complete story (25 chapters) although its sequel The Next Dance is still a WIP. It starts as a HP/HG but finishes as Harry/Parvati. Monks in the Church of Magic

    (Link)
    Episode 8 of Rushlight's Pendulum of Choice has everyone in a monastic-type order. http://slashcity.org/rushlight/pendulum8.htm

    There was also an SS/HP story either in Dawn to Dusk or SSFQF which had Snape visiting Harry in the monastery. The latter had joined the order and refused to return to the wizarding world. I think they shagged and then Snape left alone and disappointed. The title unfortunately escapes me now. Will dig memory harder.

    Not sure if this qualifies but there was a recent story SS/RL which featured Sprout as a church-going Anglican who freaked out when she first received her Hogwarts letter? They had to get a priest who was also a Hogwarts alumni to counsel her. The story was about how her apprentice, who disapproved of m/m relationships, sabotaged an ingredient used in Wolfsbane so that Lupin would attack Snape after his transformation. Anyone recall this as my memory is first cousin to a sieve?

    I think this is pretty religious, despite the fact that I state that Draco isn't a religious man. At any rate, it has a lot of religious overtones...

    Redemption. H/D, NC-17 Draco prefers to place his beliefs, hopes, and fears in the hands of someone real. He prefers to pour all of his passion and pain into devotion to one person. This person is his saviour, and he is real.

    Not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but I thought I'd point you to it just in case. It's kind of Harry = Christ, in a way.

    What about a fic where canon events are presented as an allegory for religious themes? In "Iscariot," Cedar portrays Pettigrew as Judas and James as Jesus on the night of the Last Supper.

    http://www.thedarkarts.org/authors/cedar/iscariot.html

    one-shot, canon pairings, PG. Summary: A dream. A question. A betrayal. The cost.

    Possibly one of my favourite one-shots ever. Pre-OotP, I believe.

    Scratch that... Someone wrote a brilliant fic about a Jewish Snape at Chanukkah that I can't seem to find the link for right now. [info]copperbadge wrote a very touching shortfic called Kaddish with a Jewish Remus teaching Harry how to say Kaddish for Sirius.

    YAY! Found it! [info]atalantapendrag wrote Home for Chanukkah, which, despite Snape being referred to as "Sev" is quite a good fic. Stereotypical Jewish family ("Oh, Seveleh! You look more like your father every day. I could just plotz! One of these days you'll walk in that door and I'll think it's Mordecai come back to me. Come give your mother a hug!"). About Snape coming home from Hogwarts for the holidays. Some nice tension between him and Lupin re: "Christmas" break. Definitely worth a read.

    I've written a few:

    "Cenotaph," where Snape teaches Lupin a graveside ritual in case he can't perform it next year. Written pre-HBP. http://www.ssf-moonshadow.com/archive/archive/0/cenotaph.html

    "A Valediction, Forbidding Mourning," a sequel to the above set after HBP. http://www.ssf-moonshadow.com/archive/archive/4/avalediction.html

    "Old Acquaintance," wherein Snape and Lupin run into a former schoolmate who is now an Anglican priest. http://www.ssf-moonshadow.com/archive/archive/4/oldacquaintance.html

    "Mating Season," where someone sabotages Remus's potion for religious reasons. http://www.ssf-moonshadow.com/archive/archive/3/matingseason.html

    Vector's Challenge by [info]kaylarudbek has a main character (Emmy Vector) who is Roman Catholic. This does become an issue between herself and others among the teaching staff at Hogwarts.

    I think it's still a WIP, but there's a lot of it, and very good it is too.

    Rated PG-13, eventually Snape/Vector.

    Not sure it qualifies and can't read all the 37 chapters to check. Btw, it hasn't been updated since 2003.

    Um, well... I'm not sure it's considered couth to rec your own stuff, but my Time Out of Mind involves the character being transported back in time into the middle of a witch hunt. Two then hide out by asking for sanctuary from a monestary near Durham Cathedral and later there are some serious religious overtones to something that follows their return.

    The whole religious theme really doesn't kick in until the second act, though.

    Ack, I didn't say "no witch hunts," did I? I meant to. I'm sorry for that. It's a separate theme which I might take on a long time later, if I'm brave.

    Title: Gate of Ivory, Gate of Horn.
    Author: Yes, well. Me. Wemyss.
    Rating: Vy light ‘R’ at FA.
    Status: Completed.
    Characters: H/D; NL/LL, R/Hr, GW/Colin, SF/DT, RL/NT, BZ/JF-F, &c, &c.
    Official synopsis: ‘Harry and Draco are dreaming dreams. The same dreams. The same, possibly precognitive, dreams. The Headmaster knows this. He also knows that trying to fiddle a prophecy is rather dicey: look at Œdipus at the crossroads, Tom Riddle at Godric’s Hollow.…’
    Actual Reasons for Inclusion Here: These dreams of a too-good-to-be-true post-War world include: Harry-and-Draco as occasional churchwardens and permanent choir members, Dean-as-Chapel, SCR arguments about religion, Wizarding C-of-E types baffled by Muggle neo-pagans who believe in Muggle ideas of ‘magic’, an unbroken underground Celtic Church for Wizards, Tony Goldstein analogising Harry and Tom Riddle to Rabbi Akiva and The Other, respectively, Wizarding bishops of Salisbury, and of course an omnium gatherum of Mothers’s Unions, Women’s Institutes, parish jumbles, Harvest Festivals, and the scheduling conflict with the annual House-Elf Mop-Fair.

    Noagirl under her alias batsutousai has written two parts of trilogy 'Of Angels and Demons'. Three guesses who impersonates Lucifer and the first two don't count. Understandably AU.

    Oh, how does it qualify... Well, it reminds me of Kouri and Karasu's 'Fallen Into Grace' - world on three levels of Heaven, Earth and Hell where confrontations are bound to occur because of different beliefs.

    The side of Light resides in Heaven and the side of Dark in Hell with muggles in between. In other words, fantasy. I'm not sure if it qualifies because it has no biblical references but it's a good read.
